Ideologies in National Socialism
Volume 3: History of Ideas
International conference
July 16-18, 2025 | Federal Archives Berlin-Lichterfelde
The Ideologies in National Socialism project creates a repository for English-language scholarship on the ideas that defined the Nazi period and our understanding of it. The end result will be an online database of scholarly articles and three edited volumes examining those ideas in different contexts and from a range of perspectives. More information can be found on our website https://ns-ideologies.org as well as on the publisher’s website https://www.degruyter.com/serial/ins-b/html# overview The Editorial of Volume 1 (published online 12/2023 and print 12/2024) can be found here: https://www.degruyter.com/database/INSO/entry/inso.33500922/html
To that end, we have also held a series of conferences between 2021-2024 and will host another on July 16-18, 2025, in Berlin, where the focus will be the subject of our third edited volume: History of Ideas. Here we will focus on the ideas and concepts that both inspired and fed into the ideologies of National Socialism, such as Antisemitism, völkisch nationalism, occultism, and eugenics, and those that grew out of it, like Ostforschung or the Führerprinzip. We will also examine Nazism’s ideological precursors before 1933, as well as their fate after the conclusion of the war.
We therefore invite contributions exploring the history of the ideas which were instrumental to the development of National Socialist ideologies, examining the cultural and intellectual origins of these notions and/or how their later trajectories were impacted by their role in Nazism. The scope of our interest is broad: topics may include but are by no means limited to those listed above. We look forward to reading a diverse range of proposals and to invite scholars to join us at this exciting conference, which will be hosted at the Federal Archives in Berlin-Lichterfelde.
Interested parties should send a brief abstract (max. 300 words) of their proposed paper and a small biographical note to eo@ns-ideologies.org no later than April 15, 2025.
