CfA: “Handbook Ideologies in National Socialism”

Volume 2 and 3

Following the publication of Volume 1 of Handbook Ideologies in National Socialism online in December 2023 and in print in December 2024 (read the introduction here), we now call for papers for Volumes 2 and 3.

English-language historiographical study of National Socialism has concentrated overwhelmingly on the political, economic, and military aspects of this enormously rich topic. Yet, comparatively little scholarly attention has been paid to the ideological aspects of Nazism, particularly the extent to which ideology informed the actions of individuals and institutions throughout the Third Reich. Recent research and debates have deepened our understanding of the goals of – and inconsistencies within – Nazi ideology; however, the picture remains unclear both in detail and overall structure.

We therefore believe the time is ripe for a major scholarly reference publication devoted to this hugely important, and equally complex, historical topic – one that will provide a unique repository for scholarship and also encourage future collaboration.

The publication will comprise a series of volumes covering Nazi ideology in its various manifestations and in different contexts, including the military, the family, the humanities and natural sciences, medicine, racial science, religion and theology, the law, language, popular and elite culture, to name but a few.

In addition, the volumes are supported by a series of conferences and workshops that help shape the published texts by encouraging collaborative research and dialogue between contributors , who are among of the most distinguished experts in this field.

In this project, we see ideology as a referential framework that guides the actions of institutions and actors to varying degrees and in different ways. It is a systematically interconnected structure of ideas with specific political, social and epistemic relevance, bearing influence both upon the general cognitive and psychological orientation of individuals and groups within society, as well as upon society itself. Ideology, in other words, can serve as a lens through which individuals, groups and the state see the world and endow it with experiential meaning and relevance.

It is our conviction that if we fail to understand both the Nazi worldview and how it shaped behaviours in the Third Reich, we will never truly comprehend the relationship between ideas and actions – actions which, in this case, amounted to the perpetration of extreme atrocities at an unprecedented scale.

Publication Structure of “Ideologies in National Socialism”

The first volume (published online 12/2023 and in print 12/2024): Ideology and Individuals focuses on people, presenting biographical essays on senior and low-level functionaries within the regime, as well as on individuals from society at large. The central aim of the volume is to determine what, if any, ideologies different people engaged with, and how, if at all, their actions were influenced by them.

The second volume: Ideology and Institutions presents formal organizational bodies as well as state-supported cultural programmes in the Nazi regime, ranging from bureaucratic institutions to architectural styles, and the different ideologies that determined and/or influenced their actions.

The third volume: History of Ideas examines the role of a range of ideological frameworks which prefigured the rise of National Socialism, such as Antisemitism, völkisch nationalism, occultism, and eugenics, as well as ones that grew out of it, like ‘Research on the East’, and the ‘Will of the Führer,’ across a variety of institutional contexts. It seeks to determine, first, what those ideologies were, before addressing if and how they became the basis for institutional action.

The editorial office will inform around 10/04/2025 which headwords/proposals were accepted and to which group they were assigned. The submission deadline for Group 1 is 06/2025, for Group 2, 07/2025, and for Group 3, 08/2025.

After submission the articles will go through copyediting and peer review. Authors will then have two weeks to complete revisions after receiving their returned articles. After resubmission, the editorial office will provide final language polishing and proofreading. The publication of Volume 2 is planned for the 11/2025 online and 03/2026 print, Volume 3 for 03/2026 online and 06/2026 print.
